People build homemade flying contraptions, and compete to see who can fly the furthest, by jumping/running off a 30 foot pier. The teams dress up... It's mainly just for FUN.
Michael says -O yes, I think they have it over here. I seem to remember some amusing newsreel of wacky aeronauts jumping off piers into the sea with a box kite tied to a bicycle etc.
