Watch your head!

My first job was reading water meters for the town one year. That meant asking people if I could go down into their cellar with my flashlight & billing pad to write down the numbers-- no exterior electronic counters in those days. Good thing I wasn't 6'4" yet or I really would have needed a hardhat for those low beams & pipes!

  1. Is that a peanut in your hand? I was wondering if it was a very humble bribe given to you for giving a less than accurate reading.

  2. You were very brave to go down into strangers' cellars. I didn't even like going into our own.

  5. We don't have basements in Houston, but in Indiana, we did and I always found them extremely creepy. I hope they paid you well!

  6. How old were you when you did this? Crazy!

  7. Well, I probably did work for peanuts, but those are actually pennies. Not sure how old I was, but I've asked my Mom to research her old calendars, where she has always logged daily events. Stay tuned...

  8. Apparently I was 16, and I actually may have started my newspaper delivery route before that. In any case, no driver's license yet so all done by bicycle.
