Snakes in the Grass

Did you have snakes where you grew up? I was raised in the city so all we had were worms which I still hated.

When I visited my mother-in-law for the first time (she lived in West Texas), she told me to check the bed for rattlesnakes or scorpions before getting in!

Growing up in Florida I used to be on the lookout for snakes especially when working in the yard. One day while I was raking I came upon a baby rattler. Those things are more poisonous than the adults. Scary!

Actually, nothing dangerous. In the mountains there might be a rare rattlesnake, but not much else in the woods that'll hurt you except bears. Still, even those harmless garter snakes startled me, the silent way they'd suddenly slither away. At least now it doesn't bother me to see snakes on TV or in books...
