The 60's - Was It All Fun?
It seems we all remember 'flower power', etc., but there was more to the 60's than just that.
Food for thought?

La Llorona
As a child, my grandmother would tell me Mexican folk tales which were terrifying. I realize now that many of them were meant to teach a lesson, but as a kid, all that you remember at night are the witches, devils, and horse faced women. Probably the most famous of all is the story of La Llorona, or Weeping Woman. You were told if you disobeyed or were out too late, that the Weeping Woman would kidnap you.
There are a few variations to this story, but essentially it's about a beautiful woman who gets married and has children. Her husband goes on to leave her for another woman. In a fit of anger, she drowns her children which she greatly regrets and kills herself. Her wailing spirit is said to roam near water looking for her children.

A Recurring Nightmare
Night Terrors
There is so much to consider in this one but a universal truth is that all children are afraid of the dark. There are monsters under the bed, in the cupboard, outside the window. We all needed the door open a little so we had an 'escape', or a nightlight left glowing to banish the creatures back to wherever they lurked.
After doing this, it's brought all those memories back. Now I'll probably have to leave the light on.

Voices in her head
I watched a lot of scary movies about mental illness in my childhood, Sybil, The Three Faces of Eve, The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and for years I worried that I might be crazy....

Quatermass & The Pit
I was racking by brains trying to think of a scary moment in my otherwise pleasant childhood and I realised the only scary things were on TV ( nothings changed!). A programme that I remember giving me chills was the third Quatermass serial " Quatermass & The Pit" from around 1958 when I would have been 11, so a bit older than the boy in the collage. My parents let me stay up late to see it even though I watched most of it behind the sofa!
You can watch it all on YouTube HERE if you are brave enough! Ha ha!

STAIN
How very convenient this week's theme is. I am immersed in a project A Letter A Week, that involves me making a 7 x 7 cm work each week based on a letter of the alphabet.
There are two alphabets during the year and one should be 'black & white, and ? something else', the other is the artists free choice.
I am on the home run for my first alphabet, free choice, so have the letters for the word 'stain'.
The object is to present the completed alphabets in a way that is suitable for exhibition. Am still working on that.
