The subject was a mental patient. I have always wondered how much "say" he had in being subject to this experiment. Apparently it was to induce random facial expressions.
I know those photos and have seen them before many times but I still think of them as dental not mental patients. Or maybe I'm just projecting based on my last root canal....it's hard to know....
I suppose to be fair, electricity was seen as something as a marvel in those days and lots of people thought it could cure loads of stuff and inject a bit of fizz into one's torpid body.
This particular experiment does strike me as being a tad mad scientist though.

I had a dentist like that. His hobby was restoring steam traction engines, or maybe it was the other way round.
